NAAW Studio's vision for Six Coffee + Wine in Almaty, Kazakhstan, reimagines the neighborhood cafe into a vibrant space that subtly shifts its character from the bright hours of morning to the serene ambiance of evening. This innovative design concept is woven through five interconnected sections, each meticulously curated with a distinct color scheme and lighting atmosphere, mirroring the daily progression of time.
Architectural Storytelling: A Homage to Almaty's Heritage
The core of this design philosophy lies in revitalizing indigenous materials with a fresh, modern perspective. The interior walls are adorned with shell limestone, sourced from the very quarries that supplied the stone for Almaty's most iconic structures. This raw beauty is elegantly juxtaposed with delicate marble inlays and a gracefully sculpted limestone bar counter, forming the focal point of the establishment. The tinted terrazzo flooring, speckled with shell fragments that echo the natural stone, guides visitors seamlessly through the different zones. A striking stainless-steel lighting fixture suspended above the bar not only provides functional illumination but also serves as a captivating sculptural element, adding to the cafe's artistic allure.
Artisan Collaborations: A Celebration of Local Talent
Six Coffee + Wine stands as a testament to Almaty's thriving artisan community, featuring custom-designed furnishings and meticulously curated art installations. Travertine tables are paired with ergonomically designed seating from Aq Objects, whose unique forms subtly nod to traditional yurt benches. Playful inflatable chairs add a contrasting textural element, contributing to the eclectic yet harmonious interior. The gallery-like walls proudly display the photographic works of Bauyrzhan Sabit and a finely crafted felt tapestry by Dunie, enriching the space with a deeply tactile and narrative quality. Further enhancing this spatial narrative is a gradient-treated corridor by the local surfacing specialist, For Walls, ensuring that each transition within the cafe deepens the patron's journey from day to night.
