Hyundai Motor America has initiated a recall for approximately 7,855 Genesis GV60 electric SUVs spanning the 2023 to 2025 model years. This action addresses a manufacturing flaw in the stainless-steel molding located at the top of the windshield. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has highlighted the potential danger, noting that detached trim could become a projectile in traffic, posing a significant risk to other road users. This recall closely follows a separate announcement regarding a recall affecting over half a million Palisade SUVs, underscoring recent quality control challenges for the automaker.
The root cause of the GV60's windshield molding problem stems from inadequate laminating temperature control and insufficient caulking during the production process by the supplier, Keumgang Chemical. This oversight results in compromised adhesion of the molding. Vehicle owners might experience tell-tale signs such as increased wind noise, whistling, or knocking sounds near the windshield before the molding completely detaches. Despite the windshield itself remaining secure, a piece of loose stainless steel at high speeds presents a serious safety concern. Hyundai has recorded 112 instances of detachment in the U.S. between October 2022 and August 2025, though estimates suggest that only about 1% of the recalled vehicles are likely to exhibit the defect. Fortunately, there have been no reported accidents or injuries linked to this issue.
This recall encompasses nearly every GV60 sold in the U.S. since its market introduction. Genesis dealers are prepared to replace the faulty windshield molding at no cost to affected owners, and reimbursements will be provided for those who have already paid for related repairs. Owners will begin receiving notification letters on November 17, 2025, and vehicle identification numbers (VINs) eligible for the recall have been searchable on NHTSA.gov since September 20. Even though the defect might seem minor, Hyundai stresses the importance of timely repairs to mitigate potential safety hazards for all motorists.
