Envoy Textiles, a major player in Bangladesh's garment sector, has successfully secured a significant $30 million sustainability-linked loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). This financial agreement marks a pivotal moment as it represents the ADB's inaugural sustainability-focused loan within South Asia. The funding is strategically allocated to bolster Envoy Textiles' operational capabilities and commitment to environmental stewardship. Specifically, a portion of the loan will facilitate the design and construction of an advanced automated spinning unit at its Jamirdia factory in Bangladesh. Additionally, the investment will support the installation of 3.5 MWp rooftop solar panels, underscoring the company's dedication to renewable energy sources, and will also be utilized to refinance existing short-term local working capital loans.
This initiative is poised to substantially enhance Envoy Textiles' production capacity, with the new spinning unit projected to increase annual yarn output by 4,550 tonnes. This expansion is primarily aimed at strengthening the company's in-house production of denim fabrics, a key component of its business. A core aspect of this sustainability-linked financing model is the establishment of clear, measurable targets. Envoy Textiles is committed to achieving specific goals related to rooftop solar electricity generation and a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Hoe Yun Jeong, ADB's Bangladesh country director, highlighted the importance of this partnership, noting that the ready-made garment industry is a vital economic driver for Bangladesh, contributing over 80% of its total export earnings, and recognizing Envoy as a leader in denim manufacturing. This collaboration, he added, sets a new benchmark for environmental sustainability and industrial modernization within the garment sector.
Envoy Textiles currently produces approximately 54 million yards of denim annually, accounting for roughly 10% of Bangladesh’s total denim fabric capacity. The company is also distinguished as the operator of what is recognized as the world's first platinum Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified denim manufacturing facility by the United States Green Building Council. This latest financing builds upon a previous textile manufacturing project between Envoy Textiles and the ADB in 2022, which saw investment in energy-efficient spinning machinery and additional equipment.
